Addressing Discrimination: The Indigenous Human Rights Program

Recorded on October 7, 2026

Urban Indigenous people often experience racism and discrimination as part of everyday life. This can happen at work, in housing, or when accessing services. Many urban Indigenous people also do not have access to information about their legal rights and the options available to them.

The Indigenous Human Rights Program (IHRP) helps urban Indigenous community members in Ottawa and Thunder Bay:

  • understand their rights,
  • explore their options, and
  • access culturally grounded support and legal advice.

This session provides an overview of the IHRP and explores how the program can help community members respond to discrimination when it occurs.

Speakers:
Nick Haissell, Senior Program Advisor Justice, Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres
Nadine Okalik, Indigenous Human Rights Law Clinic Coordinator, Odawa Native Friendship Centre
Patricia-Lee Dunnigan, Human Rights Coordinator, Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre
