Uneven Scales: An Exploration of the Distinct Legal Experiences of Black and Indigenous People in Ontario

Uneven Scales examines the distinct experiences of Black and Indigenous people in the criminal justice system and exposes the unique challenges disproportionately impacting Black and Indigenous individuals due to their overrepresentation in the criminal justice system. In consultations with over 50 participants, this research demonstrates the urgent need for legal and social support that is accessible, culturally relevant, and one marked with understanding of the distinct experiences of Black and Indigenous people in the criminal justice system. This new research is complemented by new training modules and educational resources, co-developed with the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres and the Black Legal Action Centre, on how to best support Black and Indigenous clients who are being impacted by the criminal justice system.
