Applying for a Legal Aid Ontario certificate

Recorded on May 19, 2026

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) provides legal help to people in Ontario with very low incomes. One way LAO helps is by giving people who qualify a legal aid certificate. A legal aid certificate covers the cost of a private lawyer to work on a person's legal problem for a certain number of hours.

LAO certificates are an essential resource that many people with low incomes rely on to get legal help in Ontario.

This session covers:

  • the services LAO certificates cover
  • who qualifies and how to apply
  • the types of legal issues covered
  • the limits of LAO certificates
  • common challenges

Speakers:
Tania Princz-Lebel, Staff Lawyer, Connecting Ottawa
