This report describes an Indigenous justice initiative intended to build and strengthen relationships between a community legal clinic in Hamilton and the Indigenous community. The report also contains 16 recommendations for the clinic's practice and outreach informed by 14 Calls to Action from Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Committee. By sharing the report, the clinic aims to share knowledge that it has gained to date through its work with Indigenous communities.
Some of the clinic's recommendations related to the provision of public legal education and information (PLEI) will require the clinic to:
- provide written public legal education materials in Indigenous languages
- ensure that PLEI initiatives for Indigenous people must be culturally sensitive and culturally safe
- familiarize itself with inequalities created by the Canadian legal system for Indigenous people
- try to provide information and opportunities to engage in various formats, as many Indigenous people face barriers in accessing information and technology
