How lawyers can support and empower communities to achieve change

This report included information from visits to the US and Canada on strategies to improve community education, community organizing, research, advocacy and reform, and advice and casework. The author was awarded a fellowship to examine whether community legal centres' work could be made more effective using community organizing techniques.

The report investigates how community organizers partner with legal advocates in countries with similar legal traditions but stronger community organizing histories to achieve change, with lessons for Australian advocates. It also contains suggestions for implementation by community legal centres in Australia, based on interviews with a range of organizations across Canada, the United States, and the U.K.
