Ontarians who have questions about their employment rights can call the Ministry of Labour's Employment Standards Information Centre in 23 languages and dialects, from Arabic to Vietnamese.

Ontario routinely receives the largest number of immigrants to Canada. In some areas of the province, newcomers are able to run a small business or be employed with little use of Canada's official languages. However, some newcomers are unaware of their workplace rights and responsibilities. There is a form to leave feedback or complaints about the workplace.

Employees at provincially regulated workplaces have rights and responsibilities under the Employment Standards Act, which sets minimum standards for issues such as wages, hours of work and public holidays.

Aside from English and French, the toll-free line (1-800-531-5551) is also available in:

  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • Dari
  • Chinese (Cantonese)
  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • Farsi
  • Tagalog
  • Greek
  • Gujarati
  • Hindi
  • Oji-Cree
  • Italian
  • Korean
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Punjabi
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Tamil
  • Urdu
  • Vietnamese

Through the use of interpreters, ministry staff can answer questions about employment standards and direct callers to more information. They can also help callers locate forms for filing an employment standards claim.

The toll-free line is available 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. The ministry also produced multilingual resources on its website to help Ontarians understand their employment rights and responsibilities.
